Our History
When Joseph Loiselle, the founder of Loiselle Insurance Agency, began brokering insurance back in 1943, he never expected his insurance business would one day be run by the third and fourth generations of his namesake. Today, Joseph’s grandson, Bob Loiselle, and his great granddaughters, Melanie Loiselle-Mongeon and Brenda Loiselle-DuClos, have taken Joseph’s dream and built it into one of the region’s largest insurance agencies.
In the 1940’s, Joseph had established himself as a popular barber in Pawtucket and had invested in several multi-family houses. Having learned how to broker insurance for his own properties, Joseph began advising his customers on purchasing homeowner’s, auto and life insurance policies. Upon his untimely death, his twenty-two year old son, Maurice Loiselle, continued his father’s insurance business. Maurice, who had inherited the entrepreneurial spirit from his father, also operated a dry cleaner and worked as a toolmaker. He became a developer and was responsible for building the Fairlawn Country Club in Lincoln. He ran the insurance agency next to his dry cleaner at 887 Dexter Street in Central Falls, but by 1963 the agency had grown to such an extent that he opted to close the dry cleaner and focus solely on the growing insurance business.
Having joined the agency in 1973, the twenty-seven year old Bob Loiselle took over the reigns of the family business when Maurice retired in 1979. Bob soon oversaw the agency’s rapid expansion. In 1982, the agency built and moved to its current location at 279 Dexter Street in Pawtucket. During the next decade, the agency purchased seven main street insurance agencies in Pawtucket, Central Falls and Lincoln, many of which were similar in size to his father’s previous agency. In fact, one of the largest agencies purchased was Lemay & Loiselle, of no relation, and two of the four of its employees still are employed at Loiselle Insurance Agency today.
For nearly fifty years, the agency had been known as Maurice Loiselle Insurance Agency. The agency changed its name to Loiselle Insurance Agency but has maintained its corporate identity with the Secretary of State as Maurice Loiselle Insurance Agency.
The fourth generation of the Loiselle family joined the agency in 1999, when Melanie Loiselle-Mongeon, a former teacher, began a management training program. After spending a three month period in each major area of the agency, Melanie gravitated towards the personal lines department and soon became team leader. Today, Melanie serves as the agency administrator and vice president, and like her father, has become active in the Independent Insurance Agents of Rhode Island. She was elected the youngest president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Rhode Island, and she and Bob are the first father and daughter to serve as president of the state’s insurance association. For Bob’s distinguished service both locally and nationally, IIARI honored him with the “Carleton I. Fisher Outstanding Agent Award,” which is the association’s lifetime achievement award and has only been given to six agents in over 100 years.
In 2003, Brenda Loiselle-DuClos came to work at the agency. It was not Brenda’s first job at Loiselle Insurance Agency; she had worked part time during high school and college. Brenda brought to the agency her experience from Accenture Consulting of Hartford, Connecticut, where she specialized in insurance. Brenda currently works as marketing and systems manager and vice president. In this capacity, Brendaalso oversees agency management. Brenda is also an active member of IIARI, serving on Communication Committee, Technology/Automation Committee, Young Agents Committee, and is the chairperson of the IIARI Convention Committee.
