friends way logoIn June and July, we donated the funds raised during our Casual Fridays to Friends Way. Our team member, Nathan Green, suggested the charity.

Unfortunately, Nathan’s family recently went through a devastating loss of a close relative. Fortunately, Friends Way was there for Nathan, his wife, and four children during their difficult time.

Friends (Families Reaching Into Each New Day) Way is the only family bereavement center in Rhode Island. Their highly qualified mental health care professionals and extensively trained community volunteers provide peer support to children and their families in a safe and nurturing environment.

Additionally, Friends Way provides community outreach and crisis intervention for grieving families. They have conducted over 150 presentations and training workshops to help guide children through loss.

Many people have difficulty expressing their grief and it can be particularly difficult for children and teens. Friends Way provides an avenue for them to share with others. Instead of acting out or slumping into depression, their support groups offer children and teens opportunities to connect with other grieving peers. They realize others grieve too and it’s okay to feel the way they do.

Friends Way is the only children and teen’s bereavement program of its kind in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. They offer open-ended groups for children ages 3 to 18 and their families following the death of a significant person in their lives. They rely heavily on the expressive arts such as art, music, storytelling and games so youth can vent their pain and frustration in a positive way, instead of internalizing pain.

However, parents benefit greatly too. It is often difficult to talk about loss with others if they’ve never experienced it themselves. Meeting with other adults who’ve lost someone they love can make it easier to heal.

Besides support, Friends Way can also refer families to appropriate professionals so they receive the care they need. All services are free for families as they raise all funds themselves and through your greatly appreciated support.

If you would like to help this worthwhile cause, the organization has volunteer opportunities. Of course, they’re always grateful for your one-time or ongoing donation. All donations are tax deductible.
