In March, we donated the funds raised during our casual Fridays to The Learning Community, a local charter school. We raised $70, and the company matched it for a donation of $140.
Loiselle Insurance Agency is also a corporate sponsor of their Get Smart event held this year on April 4th at The Met in the Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket. A team of our representatives attended the event including Melanie Loiselle-Mongeon, a member of the Host Committee.
The highlight of the night was a speech by a recent graduate of The Learning Community, Flor, who is now a freshman at Blackstone Academy. Her enlightening talk gave attendees a sneak peek into what young immigrants and families endure when they immigrate to the U.S.
Despite her struggles, Flor was quick to point out that as a Guatemalan immigrant in a foreign land, The Learning Community made an extremely positive impact on her life. When she arrived, she was reading English at a 1st grade level, but was in the 5th grade. The school increased her skills and she is now an honors student with a 4.0 GPA.
Flor is just one example of the dramatic student results of The Learning Community. Their remarkable success also helps other public schools since they can learn from The Learning Community’s successes and challenges.
Notable initiatives include The Teaching Studio which will bring reading support to five Rhode Island elementary schools. The organization already works directly with hundreds of public school educators and countless public schools, including East Providence Public Schools, Sophia Academy, Hull Public Schools and Leominster Public Schools. However, they’re always hoping to take on new partners. They’ve already worked with over 3,800 students in the area.
Their focus is always on teacher quality since growing evidence suggest the single most important factor in improving student achievement is effective teaching. Their programs are so successful since they offer teacher-to-teacher professional development fine-tuned for the challenges of urban districts, including poverty.
They partner with many organizations including the W.K. Kellogg and Rhode Island Foundation and they also started the Growing Readers Initiative to reach every student K-2 in the district. In their first year 86% of participating students read at or above the national benchmark after six months.
Obviously, these initiatives require substantial funding, but the results are nothing short of spectacular. Our children are our future and a good education is fundamental to personal and social success.
The team at The Learning Community strives to give every single student a day worthy of their amazing capacity. The success of their fundraising efforts allows them to provide the opportunities students need to overcome poverty and learn.
If you would like to donate to this worthwhile cause, you can do so here. They welcome one-time, monthly, memorial, and planned giving donations towards their annual fund. Your donation can help a student receive the education they deserve.
