Did anyone happen to see the write up on the front page of The Valley Breeze regarding our awesome client, Colonial Bakery? They are celebrating 100 years in Valley Falls! They might be the longest running bakery in Cumberland!
The Gonsalves family opened the bakery doors at 185 Broad Street Cumberland, back in 1914. The original owners, Johnny and Antonio Gonsalves passed away in 1992, and the doors closed for two years, until a local family’s dream was to start a business. The Mello Family reopened the bakery in 1994. They were unfamiliar to baking, but with the help of a former employee, Albertino Duarte, they were tossing dough and decorating pastries like no one’s business! Duarte taught them everything they needed to know using the Gonsalves’ recipes. They made sure they preserved the Portuguese history, but have since added a much larger selection of Italian and French goodies.
Make sure you keep your eyes and ears open because in September it’s rumored that they will be expanding the storefront to house a deli, which will include bowls of soups and coffee.
If you haven’t had the chance, stop in and say Hi to Angelina and Manny Mello! Make sure you try some delicious fruitcakes, custard pie, and Portuguese rolls! You won’t be disappointed!
