On Saturday, October 13, 2012, Loiselle Insurance Agency was a corporate sponsor for the first annual Evening of Wishes for Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, Rhode Island. We are especially honored to be blogging about this event because our very own Melanie Loiselle-Mongeon served as a committee member for the charitable auction. Early last year, Melanie’s best friend’s six year old daughter, Cristina, was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer known as Wilm’s Tumor. Cristina was granted her wish to meet Taylor Swift (below).

Even better than having her wish granted, Cristina is currently cancer-free! This has really touched Melanie, who has young children of her own, and has inspired her to dedicate her time and talents to such a worthy charity. Of course our agency has also become a big supporter of the Make-A-Wish program.
The Evening of Wishes consisted of a silent auction, a live auction, dinner, the wonderful opportunity to meet a few Wish children, and speeches from a variety of people. The night was finished off with music and dancing. One of the guest speakers was a woman whose daughter passed in July of 2012. Her daughter’s Wish was to meet Justin Bieber and like a fairy godmother, Make-A-Wish granted it to her. She and her family were flown to Norway to attend a concert of his and she was able to personally meet him backstage. She even had the chance to record an iPad video with him, a keepsake that her family will now deeply cherish for years to come.

The event was a huge success, in large part due to all of the generously donated auction items. Attendees had the opportunity to bid on dining out certificates, jewelry, artwork, handmade furniture, show tickets, game tickets, vacation packages, and even a Patriots themed Golf Car. One of our favorite auction items was a beautiful red chopper bike, which was generous donated by a great client of ours, Miller’s Auto Body of Cumberland. No…neither Melanie nor Brenda made a run for the sunset on it, rather, another gentleman won it. Instead of him going off to show his friends his ‘hot new ride’, he gave it to a young boy who had recently lost his sister to cancer.

Considering that it was the foundation’s first annual Evening of Wishes, it was a huge success. There was a sold out audience and the event was able to gross the astounding amount of $271,000 (just think of all the children who will wake up with the biggest smile plastered on their face)! Considering the average granted wish costs $7500, that’s a lot of happy well-deserving children!
All-in-all, it was definitely an event to remember that reminded us to appreciate the greatest gift of all, life. Our agency was proud to be a sponsor and plans on continuing to support Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
