As a homeowner, one way to reduce the need for homeowners insurance claims is to take action to reduce your risk of property damage. A proven, effective way to reduce the risk of fire damage is through installing fire sprinklers in your home.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 2006-2010 data indicates that in home structure fires, the rate of death was 83% lower and property damage 69% lower where sprinklers had been installed. If that isn’t a good enough reason to do so, then what is?

These sprinklers are designed to activate only in the area where fire occurs. This helps to limit the spread of fire, allow time for occupants to evacuate and to extinguish the fire much more quickly than otherwise.

Fire sprinklers provide other benefits too, such as a reduced need for water from fire-fighting equipment, a reduction of landfill from charred debris, and lower greenhouse gas emissions from fire.

Unlike smoke alarms, which respond to the presence of smoke, sprinklers respond to heat and flame. Both types of system may be very useful in your home in the prevention of harm from the incidence of fire.

For more information on fire sprinklers, see the Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), and the NFPA. To learn more about home insurance, feel free to contact our agents at Loiselle Insurance Agency by calling 401-723-8510!
