Valentine’s  Day is one of the most popular days of the year to get engaged. If you were one of the lucky lovebirds who got engaged this past weekend, congratulations! Now the wedding planning fun begins.  However, before you begin planning your future together, don’t forget to protect it. It is really important to insure your engagement ring.

Insuring your engagement ring is very simple. It is most commonly added as a rider (added coverage) to your current renter’s or homeowner’s policy.  Many people neglect specifically insuring their engagement ring, assuming their current insurance will cover it. Although many homeowner’s and renter’s insurance policies include some coverage for jewelry , there are serious limitations, such as only covering theft up to a certain value amount. A jewelry rider will  cover your ring up to its appraised value as well as protect it from a broad range of perils including mysterious disappearance, theft, or simply losing the stone. There is usually no deductible that applies when you purchase separate jewelry coverage. Adding your ring to your policy is easy…all you need is an appraisal from a jeweler. If you do not currently have a homeowner’s or renter’s policy, another option is to take out a separate policy that just covers jewelry.

The cost of the coverage depends on the value of the ring. The average cost is between $1 to $2 per $100 dollars of value. For example, if your ring is valued at $5,000, at $1.40 per $100, it would only cost you $70 per year to insure your ring.  That is less than $6 a month!

It is important to add that this insurance is not just limited to engagement rings.  We can help you protect any jewelry that is precious to you.  The same rules apply…just bring us an appraisal and we can get you the coverage to protect your valuable items.
