Hunger isn’t just a problem for developing countries – it’s a problem that a number of Rhode Islanders face every day.

Food pantries serve a vital service in the community. In the U.S., one in seven (over 46 million people) rely on them to feed their families.

The 2016 Hunger Report indicates 12.7% of the population of Rhode Island is “food insecure.” That’s almost 180,000 people, and almost 20% of those are children. Of those people, 22,139 depend on school breakfast and lunch programs and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), too.

Proper nutrition is essential to growth and development in children and an important factor in the prevention of chronic disease. Those who do not have enough to eat are also more susceptible to depression.

The main drivers of healthcare costs and poor health are diet. One study from Boston Medical Center estimates we spend $160 billion annually for emergency rooms and hospitals, because of the serious impacts of hunger and food insecurity.

The Northern RI Food Pantry is a Rhode Island nonprofit that provides high-quality foods and services to people in the area on an emergency basis. They provide food to supplement existing sources so pantry users receive an adequate, healthy diet.

Loiselle Insurance realizes the importance of maintaining proper nutrition for families, so we were also a corporate sponsor of the annual “Miles for Meals” bike ride held on June 5th at Diamond Hill Park. Three rides of 7.5, 15, and 32 miles successfully raised substantial funds for the cause again this year. All money raised goes back into the pantry for stock and to keep up operations.

The Northern RI Food Pantry is on a mission to end hunger in our state and we’re proud to contribute to such a worthwhile cause. If you wish to donate, you can do so online. The Food Pantry relies on donations and grants for operations and you can rest assured your donation reaches those who need help the most.
