Throughout the month of January, our casual Friday’s at the office benefited the Learning Community. Loiselle Insurance Agency raised $360 dollars which will help the Learning Community continue their wonderful mission. We are delighted to contribute to such a deserving institution.

The Learning Community is a public charter school located in Central Falls, RI. They educate over 500 students in grades K-8 from Central Falls, Pawtucket and Providence.

What is a Charter School?
Charter schools are independent public schools, which are operated by educators, community leaders and parents.  Although held to the same academic standards, they are allowed to develop their own curriculum.

How is the Learning Community different?
Founded in 2004, their goal is to close the achievement gap, proving that poverty is not a barrier to achievement. They focus on a comprehensive literacy program using a workshop structure to teach writing, reading and math.  Teachers begin a new topic with a concise lesson and then allow students the freedom to discuss and master the material in their own way.  Students in every grade are encouraged to see themselves as independent learners.

Learning communityAre they finding this method successful?
This unique type of educating is proving to be very successful.  In recent NECAP tests, Latino students from the Learning Community outperformed Rhode Island’s white student population in both math and writing assessments.

What is the NECAP?
The New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) is a series of achievement tests that measures academic skill and knowledge based on grade expectations.

What is the Teaching Studio?
The Teaching Studio is a professional development program, offered by the Learning Community, specifically for urban teachers.  This program works collaboratively with the public schools to find the most successful ways to educate urban youth. They offer coaching, workshops and much more.
