If you are active on social media, you may have seen pictures of people balancing spoons on their nose with the hashtag #spoontember. Spoontember is a social media campaign with the goal of raising awareness about hunger in the United States. Feeding America is the non-profit organization behind this inspiring campaign.
Feeding America is one of the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organizations. They have a nationwide network of over 200 food banks and 600,000 food pantries and meal programs across all 50 states. Feeding America secures donations from food and grocery manufacturers and retailers. They then distribute these donations to the food banks in their network, who then ensure that they are available for the children, families and seniors at risk of hunger. Last year, Feeding America provided over 3 million meals to people in need!
It seems appropriate that Spoontember would fall in September which is Hunger Action Month. The statistics of hunger in America are shocking. I was stunned to learn that 1 in 7 people in the United States go hungry every day. That is unbelievable, especially when you consider the fact that we live in one of the richest countries in the world.
Spoontember has gone viral, with celebrities such as Chelsea Clinton, Patricia Heaton and Mario Batali all participating to raise awareness about this important cause. We decided that we also wanted to participate in Spoontember. However, we didn’t just want to take a picture and post it. We thought it would be great if we all brought in non-perishable food items to donate to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank!
