Are you looking for ways to save money in this tough economy? Many business owners forget that implementing green initiatives into their company is an easy way to save on profits. However, if you are inexperienced with the movement, you may not know where to start. In addition, by going green, you can save money on your protection plan. According to Simply Marvellous, taking steps within the office can results in a happier and healthier working environment:
1 – Stop using staples.
Reusable fasteners like paper clips or treasury tags are a far better option than staples. If everyone working stopped using staples, this would probably save 120 tons of metal each year.
2 – Use energy-efficient light bulbs.
At first, a lot of people were put off from using energy-efficient light bulbs due to their funny shape and how they flickered when you switched them on. But they are much better now and worth investing in. Lamps that use LED lights are also a better option. Although the initial outlay is more, they don’t have to be replaced as often and are cheaper to run.
3 – Turn off lights.
Turning the light off when a room isn’t in use, such as the meeting room or kitchen could save your business a lot of money in electricity bills.
4 – Switch off your computer.
If you are going to be away from your desk for more than half an hour, it is probably worth putting your computer into sleep or energy-saver mode. If you are going away for more than two hours, then switch it off.
5 – Turn the stat down.
If you have a centrally controlled thermostat, turn it down just one notch. This will help save money more than you realize. And if your staff complains, think of solutions that work for everyone, such as suggesting warmer clothes.
When your mobile phone is charged, unplug the charger from the socket. Even if your phone isn’t connected or when it’s fully charged, the charger it is still using electricity. It’s a good idea then not to leave your phone charging overnight because for most of that time, it’ll be wasting electricity and costing you money for no reason.
7 – Recycle.
It’s an obvious one but it’s surprising how many businesses don’t do it because they think it causes extra work. If you provide bins for everything that can be recycled (paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, carrier bags, ink toners, CDs etc) and then leave the staff to put their own waste in the correct one.
8 – Use Recycled Paper.
The cost of recycled paper has come down considerably in the last few years. When buying supplies for your printer, consider using paper that is at least part recycled or from a managed forest. Also, talk to your printer about using recycled paper for your letterheads and business cards. Some printers even use more environmentally friendly vegetable inks for printing.
